Turn-key solutions
for our clients.
The focus of our practice is the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure to extend its useful life or to repurpose it for our client’s needs.
Prior to founding CEI, Richard Churchill, has been involved in the construction industry since 1979. He earned a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, cum laude, from Northeastern University in 1987 and later a Master’s in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He spent the following 18 years with various engineering firms providing structural design of buildings, bridges, tunnels and deep foundation elements.

Rick spent 7 years with the engineering firm AECOM designing Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel Project, colloquially known as the Big Dig. He then spent the next 5 years on the project with Contractors Jay Cashman, Inc. and Modern Continental. In this capacity his primary responsibilities included the direct supervision of underpinning of the I-93 viaduct, also known as Boston’s other green monster, and the MBTA’s green line viaduct from North Station to Leverett Circle. This underpinning was necessary to re-support the viaducts to remove their columns and supporting deep foundations to allow for advancement of the Central Artery tunnels below. These operations allowed for traffic to continue uninterrupted above, while the tunnels were completed below.

Following founding CEI in 2005, Rick applied the knowledge he gained to modify existing infrastructure to extend its useful life or otherwise re-purpose it. CEI provides condition assessment, remedial repair design, fabrication, temporary support and erection services allowing our clients a single source solution for structural problems. Many of our projects are prosecuted under adverse conditions, within confined spaces or in marine environments. However, our experience provides our clients with cost effective solutions for buildings, bridges, dams and other water control devices. Rick is a registered professional engineer (structural) as well as a construction supervisor licensed by the Commonwealth.
